: Sometimes (a few times per week) Windows doesn't start.
: In the BIOS I can see that at that time the BIOS does not recognize the HDD.
: After applying the "automatic detection" the HDD is
: almost always recognised immediately (sometimes more
: attempts are necessary)and the system works fine.
: Also when working, I sometimes get a "blue screen" (W2000 systemabend) and after restarting I can see
: that the same problem applies (no HDD).
: Also when working, I quite often hear a lot of "clicking" noise from the HDD.: The HDD is a Maxtor 60 GB 7200rpm (0,5 year old).
: I'm rather worried about it because the frequency seems
: to increase.
: Do you think it is a hardware-failure ?
:
The clicking could be repeated attempts to read a bad sector (or more) on your HDD, could be something worse. Suggest that you download Maxtor's diagnostic utility and run it - if the HDD is mechanically and electrically OK run a surface scanner (use scandisk, THOROUGH SURFACE SCAN if Maxtor doesn't have a scan function).WARNING: Some HDD Diagnostics have a DESTRUCTIVE (erases the disk) surface scanner - backup your data files before you run any (data) "destructive" test on your HDD. WARNING
Good Luck,
Henry
