: I have an old 486 the kids like to run some games on. Now it will only go to the A: prompt with a boot disk. I did get it to recognize my C: drive once but not again today. I found that all of my files on the C: drive are corrupt. I would like to reformat and reinstall win 95. I can't reinstall because its a doublespace drive and it has to be un compressed.
: Is there a free or sharware program for reformating the compressed C drive?

You may have a bad or failing HDD. If you have any files you want to keep - find a way to recover them NOW (post if you need info).

Suggest that you just erase the drive completely (NOT simply reformat) and start clean. Just download the HDD maker's diagnostic utility, run the diagnostics and if the HDD is OK erase the drive with the destructive write/read surface test (if available) or with the erase (aka "low level format") function. Then, partition, format, run scandisk (thorough surface scan IF you COULD NOT run the maker's write/read surface scan) and install your OS.

Post again before you do anything if you have a compaq system.

Good Luck,
