: I've got a 20G seagate Barracuda (st3204201) thats just died (in a win 98 machine) and I'm wondering about what if any data recovery I can do (by myself - I'm not able to pay hundreds, and will just get a replacement when I've done everything I can on my own)
: Seagates own diagnostic says the drive is defective and to return it.: The odd thing is that under both DOS and Win, on several different computers, I can see the directory structure and file names, and can copy small (up to 100k) files off the drive, but larger files give read errors.
: On any access - even for displaying the file names - the drive will click away for a while before completing or failing.: I'm pretty resigned to having lost this data, but the fact that I can copy small files makes me wonder if there are some tricks that might work, that I don't know about.

If your data have REAL value and you are willing to risk the warranty (data worth more than $100??) you can TRY to revive the drive long enough to GET YOUR DATA AND RUN:
