Success! And it was so easy.

I downloaded Western Digital's disk installation software, created the boot floppy, and booted. Seems to be basically the same software the Maxtor uses (built on DR DOS and offers EZ-BIOS). Told me the same thing: i.e., 1) both drives were identified properly, 2) my WD slave drive had EZ-BIOS installed, and 3) there was an error with it when I ran diagnostics.

Quick Check errored out when I tried it on the WD disk. Gloom. But the full sector-by-sector check didn't find any errors. When I switched to the Maxtor drive, it warned me--as Maxtor's MaxBlast had--that if I wanted to access the WD, I should install EZ-BIOS on the Maxtor drive as well. The difference is that when I said yes, it did. Painlessly. MaxBlast had failed at the same point.

Rebooted without partitioning or anything else and now both drives are accessible--C: and D:--and with all files/installs apparently intact.

Thanks, again, for the advice. Is this a huge secret? Again, I'm not techically minded but I've never seen any mention of this kind of thing in PC publications or Web sites before. Your posting was one of the very few I found using Google that actually addressed this problem although, to be fair, I found one or two mentions in the disk drive manufacturers' knowledge bases.
