Henry,

Thanks for the feedback. I've been able to restore 99% of my data via the tape backup so my heartrate is back to normal. I've not used this PC at home very much in the last year (nearly always use my laptop) so the loss is minimal. Yes, I thought about data recovery (this would be the perfect candidate) but it was very expensive the last (and only) time I looked at it years ago when my HD crashed. Fortunately I had backed up then, too, though I lost a few days of work. That's when I changed from manual to automated backup.

You'll laugh out loud, but frankly, the main reason I got myself into this mess is that I blew a fuse on the motherboard a few months ago (plugging a serial mouse into the PS/2 port with an adaptor without shutting down) and ended up buying a used motherboard and CPU on eBay to upgrade a rusty boat anchor (486DX4/100) to a shiny boat anchor (Pentium 200MMX) for $40. My family was so happy with the improvement (MS Word, children's games, Quicken, etc.) that I picked up a USB port adaptor ($8) and decided to upgrade from Win95 to Win98 so we could download images from the new digital camera, install a $10 NIC so I could transfer files to/from my laptop via a crossover network cable, etc. You've heard the rest.

I spent some time on Western Digital's knowledge base (I always learn more from these crises than at any other time) and now have THEIR proprietary EZ-BIOS/disk installation disk, plus several notes that indicate it may yet be possible to get access to my WD disk. If so, I'll post back.

I can't thank you enough for the expert help. I was truly desperate and depressed then. Now I just feel stupid.

And yes, I plan to reinstitute the automatic tape backup I used when this was my primary PC. I stopped doing it because I ran out of tapes (bad combo of too few media plus daily incrementals/weekly differentials--didn't want to risk a failed backup and losing the one I had) AND wasn't really using the PC anyway. Fortunately the last differential I had was last year and not much has changed since then.

Chip
