: : I have a HP Pavilion 4450 (and yes I know that is my first problem). I have a 6 gig hard drive and I wanted to put another hard drive in as a slave drive. I traded for one from my daugters boyfriend who had upgraded a Hp that he had. The new drive is the exact same hard drive. Quantum Fireball Series 3.5.I can't get the computer to reconize the second drive. Any help would be appreciated.

: You said the drives are the "same" - EXACTLY the same model number? EXACTLY the same capacity?

: Some possibilities include jumper settings - get jumper settings from the Quantum section of Maxtor's web site. IF both HDDs are on the same cable (same IDE adapter port) one must be "master" the other "slave"; some drives have settings for master alone and different for master with slave. Bad cable, poor connection, IDE connector not sunk COMPLETELY into HDD socket, bent pin, bad drive, ... If CMOS Setup (BIOS) doesn't see the drive DO NOT try to access it from windows anyway (probably won't work, but if it does it could create other problems).

: Some things to try:
: 1. Make sure the drive is spinning up; if not, check the power connector - is it working? No spin, no go.
: 2. Try to detect the "new" drive in CMOS Setup when it is alone on the system - set as slave, then as master alone. If you can't get past this test, find out WHY.
: 3. Try installing the "new" drive on the secondary IDE adapter port; can usually be either master or slave (ONLY HDD on the system); if that works, try with the "old" drive on the primary IDE port (requires another IDE cable).
: 4. If nothing works, how do you KNOW the drive is good? Does it STILL work in the original computer?

: If you still have trouble, plese post your results - maybe we can come up with some better ideas.

: Good Luck,

Hey you all

This link is directly relates to my problem. I am trying to install the exact same HDD as a slave. My bios detects the HDD but it has the wrong number of heads and the total capacity is also displayed wrong.
Then I tried to remove my primary HDD and made this HDD as primary booted from the floppy. It shows that there is Quantum FireBall HDD but again it has the wrong space and other specs. After booting from the floppy it doesnt detect the HDD at all. When I try to format c:\ it says not formatable. What do u think the problem is?

Thanks
Bye
Khallu
