: : I was wodering if someone here could help me. I have an old 6x86 computer with 2 hard drives - 'c' drive has 2.3gig capacity and 'd' drive has a capacity of 4.1 gig. I want to send this computer away to boarding school with my daughter and was told that the best way to clean it up is to format the hard drive. I have not done this before and was hoping that someone on this forum would be able to tell me how to do it in simple step by step instructions. I know how to get to the DOS prompt :-) Also once I have formatted it do I just put in the Windows '98 CD to re-install? Thankyou in advance.

: HDD repartition and format WILL NOT delete or overwrite your files on your HDD; PC techies can easily recover the files. If you have personal files you don't want to risk "going public" you need to do something that is more secure (NOT terribly difficult). Post again if you need help with this [need to know your HDD maker(s)].

: Re-partition and format WILL destroy all direct links to your files and personal data and make them inaccessible to the typical PC user. If you do this you will need to re-install your Operating System and applications as they will be inaccessible, too.

: Maxtor posted a couple of fine, detailed HDD partition and format articles on their web site, one for win95a and earlier (Doc #20004) and one for win95b and later (Doc #20006 - this is the one you need for win98). You can find them at:

: These articles apply to any make HDD. If you want to use more thorough HDD erasure procedures USE ONLY THE UTILITIES POSTED ON THE HDD MAKER's web site.

: Hope this helps,
: Henry
