: I was running Windows 98 and linux on a single hard drive.
: I bought a new one : Maxtor D740X-6L040J2 40Gb.
: I installed it as a slave on my computer. To do so, I had
: to upgrade my bios because large drives wasn't supported.
: Everything was going well, and I installed Windows XP on
: my new hard drive.

: A few days ago, XP was running, and suddenly reboot.
: So lilo runs, I choose Windows, and as I have both W98 and
: WXP, I have to choose. I choose XP, and then black screen :
: Your hard drive doesn't work blablabla. I can't do anything
: else but booting again. If I boot again, I get the same thing
: But If I do a cold boot (power off, wait like an hour, and then
: power on), it works. I can run Windows XP, except that :

: - after a certain amount of time, it crashes without any warning.
: - chkdsk doesn't work on my new hard drive: it says : chkdsk is not available
: for RAW filesytem.

: More over : if I unplug my new hard drive, and run linux
: (on my old hard drive), everything goes well
: if I plug my new hard drive (as a salve), and run linux (always
: on my old hard drive), I get errors like:
: hda : dma_intr:error=0x84 {DriveStatusError BadCRC}
: (where hda is my old hard drive, that works fine)

: I can't run Norton on my new hard drive, because it crashes before
: the end of the scan.

: HELP
: thanks.

: Alexandre.

Some possibilities:
1. Your Power Supply may not support all of your features - check your loads vs Power Supply Specs (Quick way - disconnect as many loads as you can - if that solves the problem then you have your answer).

2. Your new HDD may have a problem. Run Maxtor's diagnostics.

Good Luck,
Henry
