This is a tough one.

Are you sure that BIOS detects the drive automatically? Also, a think some CD drives are not bootable but I could be mistaken. Does the CD read when it is booted? If so, check the power. Was there any recent upgrade to the system?

Were you using an antivirus before this? If so, try to get the CD-ROM working. If it is working, then it is a bad disk (probably). Otherwise, it could have been a power surge (if you did not use a surge-protected outlet), or possible something else.
