Hmmm... I think both of you have different problems with similar effects.

About the printer issue: I have also had similar issues with my monitor. It might be power related. Try plugging the printer in to a different outlet entirely.

About the other problem, with the 30 gig appearing as a smaller drive, the problem seems to be BIOS related, or just a bad disk. When you say "sometimes", did you mean that sometimes it works perfectly as expected?
The #1 thing I'd suggest is to borrow a CD burner and make backups ASAP.
After that, just speculating, it could be the BIOS, or the hard drive acting up.
If the drive has never worked, or never had more than a 10.7 GB capacity, it is for sure the BIOS. The BIOS will only support drives up to a certain size, especially on older systems. Most manufacturers (Maxtor, IBM) have software you can install to override this. Search on Google for your manufacturer and BIOS install and it shoudl be there.
The odd thing is that it sometimes does not detect the drive at all which makes me think the computer, or more likely the drive, is old and/or going bad.
Also, make sure the power to the system is ok. Make sure all the cables for the drive's power are tightly inserted inside.
