: : : Long winded questions are boring so I'll keep it breif...

: : : I am running Win XP; IDE1 master is an 8.4GB HDD, IDE1 slave is a DVD player. I have installed to IDE2 master a
: : : new Maxtor(4D040H2)40Gb and connected the IDE2 slave to a CD writer. Jumpers on the back are set accordingly.

Please, I am having the same problem, and I don't think i have a BIOS limitation. Do i have to run FDISK before it gives the new drive a letter? It seems circular.

: : : Win XP boots up and recoignises the devices at the start up. However, Win XP has not assigned a drive letter to the new hard drive albeit it has kept the assigned drive letters for the original hard drive(C), DVD player(D) and CD writer(E).

: : : Why is this? and how do I correct it?

: : : thanks for your help,

: : : ps Happy New Year.

: : Did you setup the new arrangement in CMOS Setup? If NO, enter CMOS Setup and autodetect your IDE devices.

: : If autodetect does not recognize the FULL 40 GB HDD capacity (MAY NOT recognize the new HDD at all) then you have a BIOS limitation - DO NOT TRY to use the drive anyway - it will make matters worse. There are some good ways to get your HDD in service; post again if you need them.
