: My laptop motherboard is dead but the drive is fine. Can I install it into a desktop pc to get the data off of it?

: thanks

Yes and maybe!.

You can install the laptop IDE drive just as you would any 3.5" IDE HDD - EXCEPT you need a 44 pin notebook drive convertor to 40 pin + 4 pin desktop cables. Your laptop HDD is probably mounted in a "caddy" with a 44 pin to Sony (proprietary) internal connector - you will need to disassemble all of that (watch the tiny screws, DO NOT PRESS on the top of the HDD). If you like you can install your laptop HDD in the desktop "permanent;y" with adapter rails, but that isn't necessary if you just want to grab the data and run. Make sure the HDD controller is insulated from other electrical and ground signals.

"Maybe" is about passwords - if you password "protected" your HDD you won't be copying anything if you don't remember the password(s) - even then you may have problems synching the HDD password(s) with your desktop or even another (make/model/...) laptop. If your HDD is "protected" you'll probably have an easier time if you can remove the password(s) on a friendly laptop before you go to the desktop. Otherwise the desktop may know the HDD is protected but BIOS doesn't present the password to the HDD and you can't access it. Review password setting and removeal in your laptop manual.

Good Luck,
