Problem with slave drive

I have a new CPU and installed my old 10GB Hard Drive as a slave. BIOS sees it and so does Windows 98. Both hard drives are Maxtors. (Master Drive, CDROM and Burner are fine)

When I try to access the old drive through Windows, I get "D:\ is not accessible. A device attached to the system is not functioning." I cannot access the D drive at all in DOS.

I have data on this drive that I value. I was given advice (possibly poor advice) to run fdisk on the old drive. The partition data now looks like this:
1: A Non-DOS 9750 100%
D 2: Pri-DOS 8040 82%

Is there any hope in getting access to some of my old files? I'll gladly reformat it later if I can just retrieve 3 important files now!
