: i have 2 pc's (home- p2 400/jetway 993an/maxtor 20gb) and (work- celeron 433/bcm GVC in620/seagete 1gb) both running win 98. i brought 2 hdd removeable caddies and a IBM 40 gb hdd to use in both machines as a slave.
: the drive is not detected by the bios in iether machine when set as slave and only detected by my home machine when installed as primary master, even then only 20 gb is detected, ive tried all combinations of slave/master in and out of the caddies to no avail, do i have a bios issue and how do i resolve it?
: thanks in advance for your help.

You have two BIOS problems; NEITHER mainboard supports/recognizes the 40 GB HDD.

The quickest, surest fix is to install an ATA/66 card (about $20 USD each) in each computer - it will support HDDs up to about 128 GB. You CAN use ATA/100 cards (about $40 each) or ATA/133 cards (about $80 each) but you WILL NOT notice any significant speed difference no matter how fast your HDD is.

The "cheap" (riskier) approach is to try to find BIOS updates on the mainboard makers' web sites and hope they will support HDDs up to 40 GB (unlikely). Most older board BIOS updates are limited to 8.4 GB (really old) or 32 GB (old).

AVOID drive overlay programs such as Disk Manager, EZ-BIOS, EZ Drive, MaxBlast and similar. You have so many variables (2 PCs, 3 different HDDs) that you are not likely to make a drive overlay work very well, if at all.

Good Luck,
