: I have just begun a new job where the previous employee partitioned the harddrive on the G4 Mac. I want to remove this partition. How can I accomplish this?

Try to delete the partition(s) with fdisk on your PC then repartition and format.

If you cannot delete the partition with fdisk can you do it on the mac? If yes, do it then move it to the PC for fdisk partition and format.

If unable to simply delete and rebuild partitions and reformat then you can do it for sure by erasing the drive completely. Download the HDD maker's Diagnostic Utility and run the HDD erase/low level format function and erase everything on the HDD by overwriting it with zeroes. DO NOT BE ALARMED - you WILL NOT low level format anything - that is just a misnomer that is often used in reference to HDD maker's utilities that erase HDDs completely.

If you erase the drive completely you will need to partition it (fdisk), format it and you should run scandisk and perform a thorough surface scan - just to be sure the drive is in good condition.

If you need step-by-step fdisk and format instructions go to:

[Select Product Support, Desktop (ATA) Drives then Technical Procedures]

Doc 20004 = Partitioning and Formatting Hard Drives with either MS-DOS version 6.22 or Microsoft Windows 95A.

Doc 20006 = Partitioning and Formatting Hard Drives with either Microsoft Windows 95B or Microsoft Windows 98.

Hope this helps,
