: Hi,
: I have old computer (AMD5x86, motherboard 486E 96/5/17 W83787. what hadr disk can i install? what's max volume? Bios version is v.4.50G.

: Thank you.

Your BIOS probably supports HDDs up to 0.5 GB and possibly as much as 2.1 GB.

You can use larger HDDs by using an IDE expansion card. SIIG has an ISA card that supports HDDs up to 8.4GB, Data Technology (DTC) has an ISA card that supports HDDs up to about 32 GB. If you have a PCI slot available you can use an ATA/66 card to support HDDs up to about 128 GB.

You also have HDD capacity limits dictated by the operating system. Seems like win95a and earlier (FAT16) are limited to 8.4 GB with 2.1 GB maximum partition size.

You can overcome any practical HDD size limit with an expansion card, so your Operating System is the ultimate limit - find out what it is for YOUR OS before you buy a HDD.

Good Luck,
Henry
