: : I have installed a Maxtor 40g hd. I managed to flash the bios so the computer would recognize the drive. When I boot up (with auto detect) my computer will recognize the type and make of hd, but will not report its size. Once windows loads, I can go into MY COMPUTER, select properties, and it will show the drive size of about 38g (2g short).

: : I have partitioned formatted, and installed windows on this drive, and all appears OK. My question is, should I be concerned that the size of hd is not reported when the puter is booting up (I belive that when my old 8g drive was in it would report its size on boot)?
: I'd be concerned if my BIOS did not report my HDD capacity correctly. Did it come up with an LBA number (number of sectors, CxHxS)? If yes, LBA x 512 = xxx bytes and that would be OK. If BIOS does not recognize full HDD capacity you risk losing all data above its capacity limit if scandisk starts running; it will mark the sectors BAD because BIOS doesn't know about them - it will effectively trim the HDD capacity to match the BIOS - then no more problems (with capacity limit).

: HDD capacity is reported different ways. The makers use decimal bytes (MB) as in one GB === 1,000,000,000 Bytes BUT the BIOS figures capacity as 1 GB = 1024x1024x1024 = 1,073,741,824. 1.073 x 38 is about 40.8 GB, about right?

: Hope this helps,

Well when I restart, this is what I get during boot (auto detect on):

Primary Master.....Maxtor 6L040J2
Primary Slave......Samsung VG38404A (8.40GB)

My slave hd is my old one, and as you can see, it reports its size as 8.40GB. The Master hd (which is 40GB), does not say what size it is. Once windoz has loaded and I choose properties on my C drive it says "Capacity 40,014,381,056 bytes 37.2GB"

When I do a "thorough scan check", there are no bad sectors reported.

What do you think?......
