Scandisk is a good idea, BUT scandisk WILL NOT RUN on an unformatted HDD.

Suggest that you download the HDD maker's diagnostic utility and run it. Quantum is now owned by Maxtor so you will need to use Maxtor's PowerMax/PowerDiag utility. Run the surface scanner if that is an option. HDD maker's diagnostic MAY replace the bad sector(s) with spare sectors - if not, you may need to replace the HDD.
