Virus doing much damage to a HDD may be a boot sector virus - best way to sterilize a HDD is to use the drive maker's "low level format" diagnostic function or utility which writes zeroes to every sector on the HDD (DOES NOT FORMAT anything). Find Quantum Utilities in the Quantum section of Maxtor's web site:

Maxtor's PowerMax will probably work; Maxtor bought Quantum sometime ago.
