: : Hi Tom,
: : Reformatting and partitioning is not that hard. You need the floppy disk for your hard drive, your bios on a CD and Windows, plus a few hours or more depending on the size of your hardrive and the speed of your CPU.
: : But before I would get into that, I would not bother doing any of that unless you have plenty of memory. My reasoning is all that you describe is most likely due to lack of memory. It was understandable for computer stores to be a little tight on memory when it was $1.50 or more per MB, but now that good Micron memory can be bought for about $25.00 for a stick of PC100 of 128 MB, DIMM. This is what I would start with.
: : Also, you can search your help, or the Internet for FDISK, this is the command that formats your hardrive. If you have plenty of memory and need help, Email me and we can set a time off list to reformat and partition your drive.

: Oh please let me in on how to do this. I need all the same information. I'm using my computer at work because it's the computer at home that I messed up....or rather my 14yr old did and I only made it worse by trying to fix it. So I formatted it and in preparation of starting from scratch and learning the hard way.
Hello There.
My name is ANTO.
I am not a computer whiz but I have don this several times and it is easy.
First you need all your drivers for your hard ware
and you must make up a boot up disc,You can do this by opening your controll pannell
Start,
Settings,
Controll pannel.
Click on add & remove programs.
Click on start up disc.
You will need one floppy disc.
If your pc has crashed use your mates aslong as it is win98.
When your have the start up disc insert it in your floppy drive and turn on your pc it should boot to your floppy and you will get an A Promt with choices of 1'2'3 chose without cd rom support. When the pc has finished it's checks you will have your A promt all you have to do is type
FORMAT /U C:
This will wipe every thing off your C drive
durning the process it will ask type carecters 11 just hit enter, when formating is finished you will be back at A promt press Ctrl Alt Delete this will restart your pc.
This time chose option 1 with cd rom support for ovious reasons we need cdromto load windows this will load the driver when dos is finished checking you will have your A promt.
Now you need to direct it to your cdrom. So if your cdrom drive letter was your D drive type one letter above it E FOLLED BY A COLAN
E: PRESS ENTER NOW ,You should have an E promt nowso just type SETUP.EXE and press enter windows should start to run now.
the only problim after all this is to install all your drivers windows should take care of most of them.
The only real problim is with your modem.
You might have to gointo your device manager and delete some com ports only down as far as 3
Then go into add new hard ware, and add in com port.follow the windows steps. when finished addin your modem if windows does not find it select it fromthe list and add it.
Regards ANTO.
