I have had similar problems with both
1394 cards (Western Digital and OrangeLink)
that I tried on my Dell Inspiron 7000 Pentium
II 366 MHz computer running Windows 98 Second
Edition SR1 and with 2 1394-IDE interfaces
(PYRO 1394 Disk Kit is one) and several types
of disk drives.

In particular:
I can do the following with no problems:
. read from and write to the 1394
connected disk,
. copy from the IDE disk to the 1394
connected disk,
. copy from the 1394 connected disk
to another file on the 1394 connected disk.
My disk gets "removed" or the system hangs
or something else bad happens if I try to
copy files of non-trivial size from the 1394
connected disk to the IDE disk.

I also find the disk to be slower than I expected
and therefor drop about 1/14 of the frames when
trying to capture mini DV from my Sony DCR-PC100.
(I didn't try copying from the 1394 disk to the
camcorder since I don't think the camcorder
can handle slow input at all.)

I can't tell if the problem is bad software, or
if the some bus on the computer is hanging due
to a design error, or my computer hardware is
broken.

to capture from
The particular problem that I have is that
while I can read from the disk and write to
the 1394 connected disk, copy from the and do disk to
disk copies on the 1394 disk
