I thought I needed a low level format too but
FDISK /mbr was enough. It kills the boot record whereas FDISK alone does not - If you are trying to get rid of "security" or a virus on the hard drive - use the /mbr - Most everyone thinks an FDISK wipes a drive clean - It doesn't UNLESS you use the /mbr!

: : I need a program to do a low level format for a NEC HDD. NEC Doesn't list one on thier site. Ontrack will not work either, and Packard Bell does not list one either.

: unfortunately, if this is an IDE drive, the only way to low level format is by a manufacturer. but there is a script called debug that you can run. There is some confusion out there that this is low-level, however what the script does is move the File Allocation Table around, so the computer is tricked into thinking that it has a completely blank hd with no partitions or formatting. this is also the best way to rid yourself of non-memory/bios based viruses. nothing will survive a debug. unfortunately, I don't have the script to run it anymore. but if you do some postings, maybe you'll get lucky.
: Hope this helps,
: Joey
