do these,
1) start>programs>start up' delete any entries in here (especially if you find FastFind or Office related stuff)just right click each one and delete.
2) start>run type in msconfig hit return(enter) and go to the start up tab, here is a list of all programs run by the registry at start up, ticked boxes get loaded, unticked dont. The only things you must have ticked are 'explorer' and 'systray'
3) reboot, press ctrl+alt=del to bring up a list of running tasks you should only have the 2 mentioned above.
You should now have free'd a good amount of memory but you can do a couple more things, disable screensavers and even wallpaper and then go back to 'msconfig' this time choose the config and autoexec tabs, by unticking again, disable all references in either file for CD device drivers, keyboard drivers, code page function and country.sys, these are all old DOS stuff you dont need in Win 98.reboot again and finally(screensaver must be off)run defragmenter,if you havn't for a while,it will take quite a long time, maybe a few hours!,leave it alone dont interfere or pause or cancel it.
You will now have the maximum amount of Memory your PC can get with its current configuration.
Hope your'e ok with all this.
