: : I bought a new hard drive for my NEC Versa 2405 CD. The new drive is the same drive, just made two months later than the original. However I can't get the computer to recognize the HD. Even when I specify the settings, tracks, cylinders etc. it won't boot. Trying F-Disk results in a "No Fixed Disk Present".

: : Any suggestions????
: I was paying with the bios on a versa e laptop
: and decided to exit without updating the cmos.
: From that moment on, the versa no longer saw the
: hd. I tried every thing from fdisk, format the hd
: re-installing at the software on another machine
: and resetting the hd bios settings. Nothing
: worked, the message I got was boot sector missing
: and a bios message confilict between bios setting
: and post check of hd. When the bios hd setting was
: checked it generally was found to have been set to
: custom drive type rather than bios define type
: that i had selected. Another clue was the floopy
: selection was corrupted in a similar manner. The
: CMOS backup battery was the culprit when the cmos
: is updated when exiting the bios and the battery
: is a bit tired or some contact resistance on the
: lithium battery holder garbage can be written
: into the cmos memory. Try a new battery
:

CMOS appears to be fine. It holds its settings between bootup and shutdown. It just won't recognize the drive...

Any other ideas?

Adam
