I just bought a Compaq 5888 - It came with a 28 gig which failed and wouldn't accept a reinstall. I returned it for a replacement and in the meantime decided to pull two of my old hd's out of my gateway and install them. I copied everything from the slave over to the master (both Maxtor drives - (1) 10meg and (2) 8meg)and then installed the original master as the slave and installed the compaq reinstall disk on the 8meg and installed it as the master and the 10 with all my old stuff as the slave. The reinstall appeared to partition the master as C&D and allocated a small amount of space on D to load some kind of backup files or something of such.

When I go into the cmos it appears that both drives are acknowledged, when it boots it shows up correctly with two drives, but when I go into Windows98 the second drive is not listed. I added the line Lastdrive=z in case this was the problem, I right clicked on "my computer" and changed the drive letters of my r/w cd rom and my dvd drive and moved them down a letter each.

Both drives are on the same ribbon, 0 & 1 and the power supplies are marked as 5 & 6.

Is there something I need to do in windows to get it to recognize the second drive?

Thank you very much
