Oh how I empathize. Coming upon this thread is a result of the same problem I am now facing. Hopefully Emilioana finally found a reasonable solution.

The problem with this ituation is lost data. Of course anyone can fire up fdisk and stomp the old sectors back into a usable format but the only thing that seems to be the problem is that little section of data at the front of the disk: the partition table record. When this is not being read correctly you simply cannot "see" the existing partitions. The data is all probably still there in perfect order. Also, considering that this resulted from installing a new O/S or in my case, simply switching multiple hard drives back and forth on the ide connection, it's likely a matter of the BIOS being misconfigured. I'm still looking for the information to deal with this myself but that's where I am looking -- and I certainly have no intention of formatting six GB of morgue material and other data. To suggest that is one of those instances where Karma might get you ;)
