I have an Abit BE6-II motherboard, this has a Highpoint Technologies HPT366 UDMA controller on it.

The problem I have is that I already have a Seagate 10GB drive connected to my motherboard, this runs fine.

If I disconnect my Seagate and run the Maxtor as a master, it is detected fine by the UDMA controller, but when I try to format it in DOS, it says "Formatting 14,65GB" then goes through that, it then writes the FAT tables, tells me that was successful, and then when it says "Calculating free space, this may take several minutes" the computer crashes. I left it there for 4 hours and it did nothing.

I used "MaxBlast", a program to fdisk and format the hard disk. This seems to format the disk fine, but when I try and install windows on it Windows Setup crashes when running ScanDisk, and when I run SETUP /IS to not run scandisk, it crashes when copying files needed for setup.

If I connect the drive as a slave to my seagate (which is what I wanted to do) Windows starts loading on my seagate and then crashes halfway. Is this because there is an active partition on the slave as well as the master?

How do I solve this problem?

Thanks for your help.
