I found an interesting cause for the VMM32.DLL error : a client had purchased a Genius NetScroll mouse and had installed it herself. The VMM32 error immediately surfaced and the PC would not boot. I booted up in safe mode and de-installed the device using ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE. The PC then booted fine !
CAUSE : The -first- install option is to install the mouse as a USB device (it is actually a serial mouse) She had just clicked on next/next.. until the installation had completed and so created a new instance of the infamous VMM32.DLL error.
