: Hi, my Mac has a Micropolis 4221 2GB Hard Drive in it.
: It has been going well for 2 years then I installed a
: Seagate 6GB secondary hard drive and the Micropolis is
: going extremely slowly. I am using FWB driver 2.5.2
: with a HFS+ format. In the installation did some
: settings need changing? It is on SCSI ID 1 and I am
: using System 8.1. Please help!

: In looking round the net I can see others have had
: some problems but cant find a solution.

: Kind Regards

I too own a Micropolis 4221 2gb HD (mine's an AV) and have it running on my PowerWave's internal Fast SCSI-2 bus and find the drive's performance to be quite slow. My original Micropolis drive (same model) failed after only 1.5 years of use (the drive started to make a grinding sound, sounding like a SkillSaw) then made clunking sounds as it tried to spin up.

Micropolis (still in business then) gave me a new drive after I sent them my old drive, no questions asked. I should have been suspicious, turns out they just made really crappy drives and were going out of business soon then.

Anyway, my drive seems to get slower over time (over the past 2 years), even with a G3 CPU upgrade and the latest FWB HDT 4.0 HD drivers, it's a dog. Mine is running at ID 0 with a Quantum HD at ID 1. My answer to speed? Picking up a Quantum Atlas III UltraSCSI 9.1gb hd and using an adaptor to use it on my internal Fast SCSI bus.

Using TimeDrive 1.3 (free available on the net), here are the results I get:

Latency = 4.16 ms (7211 RPM)
Ave. Seek = 9.50 ms, (access = 13.66 ms)
Max. Seek = 19.50 ms, (access = 23.66 ms)
Write transfer rate = 5242 KBytes/Sec.
Read transfer rate = 4493 KBytes/Sec.
Simulated "Typical" rate = 662 KBytes/Sec.

662KB/sec simulated typical rate - that's AWFUL!!!

Can't wait to get a G4 later this year or next with a nice large, fast HD - even if it is IDE Ultra DMA/66; sustained transfer rates of 35MB/sec+ sound good to me!
