get a second drive and install windows on it . take ytour old c drive and set it to slave via the jumpers on the back. hook it up to the same ide cable as the new drive via the plug in the middle of the cable. when you reboot the old hard drive will be recognized by windows and your bios , and designated as drive d. then after windows loads, go to my computer, right click on drive d, and select format. only do the quick format because you don't wanna erase the low level stuff , erasing the low level stuff will destroy the drive.
the reason you need two drives is that windows normally doesn't allow you to format a drive that windows is using to run everything, since if windows gets erased , there is no information left on the drive to format it with. i have heard there is a way to do it with one drive through DOS before windows boots up, but i know little about that, and i have also heard that you can do it with norton utilities with only one drive but i haven't tried that either.
