: OK Chef, and the rest of you experts. Let's see if you guys can make me understand why and what.

: I have this cheap Riva TNT2 M64 card, with no documentation or anything. The driver I used first is the Nvidia M64/M64 PRO driver in Windows. I am not a gamer (unless you count Freecell and Hearts), and my main graphic activity is Photoshop. Everything works without any problems, but I have the following questions:

: 1. My monitor supports resolutions up to 1600x1200. Although I wouldn't actually use 1600x1200, I still wonder why, in DISPLAY PROPERTIES, I am seeing only up to 1200x1024. I was getting ALL supported resolutions with my old 4Mb ATI Rage Pro. I tried to use some drivers from Creative (BC42805 + 3DB9XDRV_650), and with these my settings show resolutions up to 1600x900

> What you're seeing is the maximum supported rate for that card with those drivers, you cant always reach your monitors res.

: 2. From what I've read up to now, if I want the best drivers for this card I should stay with Nvidia, rather than Creative. Do you agree? If yes, do I need W9X_650 AND TNTW9xe? What is one and what is the other?

> Yes stick to Nvidia, go to the web site and download the latest drivers, install those first, then install Direct X 8 (yes I know you dont play games, but its not that simple)

: 3. If I were to use Creative drivers, do I need BC42805 AND 3DB9XDRV_650? What is one and what is the other? And, do I need this AGP thingo they have on their download site?

> Creative No.

: 4. Would I SEE anything better in 2D with a better card? With other drivers for the TNT2 card?

> Better cards render better 2D, a Geforce MX II would give crisper 2D and for only about 85
New drivers for the TNT may help but they're getting on a bit now. Geforce are the next stage in evolution.

: 5. As a side question: my mouse cursor flickers in some places, such as when placed on the START button in the taskbar, or when placed within an area that has some 'movement' in it (such as a selection in Photoshop, if that's of any help). Would this be related to the graphics card or the mouse driver?

>Quite probably the cards fault, nut with the latest installed you should see a difference.

: Please pretend you are talking to a 10 year old. Actually, I expect there are milions of 10 year olds who know infinitely more than I do about these things...

>Hope it was some help
: Thanks,
>your welcome
: Bill
