Diablo II & Expansion did run on the computer but won't now.

The computer is Dell 4100, Dell P991 Monitor, with a
NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro graphics card
(Hardware Version 21). The driver (Nvidia's newest)
at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEN\NVMINI.VXD from NVidia Corp
file version 4.13.01.2311. I have also tried the Dell
driver with identical results.

I previously had DirectX 7 (I think-perhaps 6) and just
upgraded it to DirectX 8.1 as well as the newest Nvidia
drivers (OK I'm trying to find out why my new game -
Wolfenstein won't run). As you know - in MicroSloth's
infinite wisdom, the move to 8.1 from a lower version
is a one way trip and there's no going back.

When the game is run the menu can come up but the game
will not run - a popup window appears after the screen
goes black (and then is restored) which is titled:

Diablo II Critical Error

In the box is the text:

Error 25: A critical error has occured while
initializing Direct3D.

With a button:

OK

If I run the video test (run from the CD, then options
then video test) I get the "Run" Popup the the progress
popup which goes "Wait" line, "Checking hardware", "Checking
Direct Draw", then the screen blanks & returns, then "Checking
Direct 3D", then the screen blanks & returns, then "Checking
3dfx Glide", "Video test complete"; then the following popup:

No Video Modes found!

You can not run Diablo II on this computer!

I got and loaded the LOD_109d patch (but the readme didn't
seem to address any DirectX issues) but no difference.

ANY IDEAS?
