Recently I have downloaded the latest graphics driver from the Intel web-site for my I740 chip-based video card for Windows 2000, "win2k10.exe". (from the support site)

The problem with this driver is that it cannot display true color graphics. I have no problem setting the mode to 24bit true color in Windows, however the image displayed is 16bit!! (tell by loading an image with 256 shades of greys)

I then boot into Windows 98 SE, which uses the "pv40_9x.exe" driver, and load the same image again. This time, the image is displayed correctly.

The way that the driver is not producing true-color yet IT ALLOWS YOU TO SET THE MODE TO TRUE COLOR makes it very hard to detect this bug. Further more it made me believed that I was enjoying true-color graphics even though I wasn't since the day I installed Windows 2000.

It is also true that Intel has stop supporting this video chip so they will not produce any new drivers. So does that mean if I am using Windows 2000, I am going to miss the 24bit true-color feature of the card? (not to mention the fact that the win2k driver has no OpenGL support already) I hope not... Anyone have similar experiences??
