: Make sure when purchacing a Motherboard that has the VIA chipset, buy the ones with the 686A southbridge chip instead of the 686B. the 686B has a known bug that will not allow UDMA in Win2K. The 686B was designed to enable ATA100 instead it is stuck in PIO under Win2K. The 686A only allows up to ATA66 but that is FAR better than 16.6mb transfer. Also by default Win2k will only transfer at UDMA 33. You have to manually edit the registry for UDMA 66, OR download the best tweaking utility, XTEQ. Xteq has a section where you can tweak your Hardware settings such as enabling UDMA66.

: SIS has the same problem as the VIA 686B southbridge chip, it wont allow UDMA under Win2k. I am trying to look for a patch on SIS's web site, but its been down for the past few days. Anyone have the patch? Would you email it to me? Thx...

Hi there Mike.B here
SIS have a Pio Mode too DMA Utility on the Website.
SIS630_ide.zip
Beneath is Quoted from the the ReadMe.Txt:
For SiS530/620/630/540, this utility helps change SiS IDE controller running from at PIO mode
to at DMA mode under Win2000 without double restart the system. After running this utility,
you must have to restart your system to make this change effective. It will not restart the
system automatically. Here provides two commands to install this utility under Win2000:

(1) Run "SiSIDE.EXE" ----> no prompt box of restart message shows, but still needs
restart your system manually to make this change effective.
, Or
(2) Run "SiSIDE.EXE /D"----> prompt box of restart message shows, but still needs
restart your system manually to make this change effective.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack_2, usually fixes this problem, if the Service Pack gives youno Joy,try the Zip Download @ the SiS Website.

Cheers Mike.B
