First look in the BIOS setup under intergrated peripherals for the IDE chanel setting it can be set to IDE 0 or IDE 1 or both or default. make sure it reads both and save then exit. now try again if the primary still fails you may have a motherboard problem, buy a new one or get a PCI IDE controller card to slot into an expansion slot.(new board is the better idea, if one chip fails others will be close behind!)
