I too had a similar problem under w2k. found this info and things look ok.

start menu / run / Devmgmt.msc

select the PCI Simple Communications Controller
open its properties / driver page
Select Update Driver
Select choose from Display a list of known drivers ...
Select modems
select Conextant as the manufacturer (Rockwells modem
The Rockwell HCF PCI Modem is the only choice.

: Do I need the make/model of my PCI Comm. Controller or the make/model of my modem? I recently bought a new motherboard which is a VIA-XXX, but my modem is a Rockwell HSF Soft56k V90. I located the drivers for the modem, but Win2k will not even recognize there is a modem connected :(
