I also had this SAME drive performance problem after upgrading Win95-OSR2.1 to Win98 SE. I reloaded the latest VIA 4in1 Drivers-4.32v (and even included the VIA IDE Busmaster (not VIA's, but Microsoft's recommendation-Knowledge Base #Q242607), but only a SLIGHT speed improvement-but quite unstable!) Well, after repeated uninstall/install of ALL disk drivers (and Device Manager Hardware) in all possible combinations (verifying Registry entries after each uninstall/install to make sure that it "took."), switching back to Win98 native DMA support, then back to VIA IDE, then adding/removing Highpoint Xstore Pro (ATAPI Enhancement) drivers that came with Epox Motherboard, I finally took the VIA IDE driver COMPLETELY off, re-checked the DMA for Win 98, and started to get decent performance again! The bottom line is that installation order 'counts' in Win95/98. Still, try to get a hold of the discontinued HighPoint Xstore Pro drivers for your MVP chipset (if you cannot, I can e-mail it to you). Most of the WEB postings and reviews recommend AGAINST using the VIA IDE Busmaster drivers with Win98 SE. Apparently, something I did uninstalled some former W95 driver and accessed full DMA capabitlities of the native W98SE ones. Still a big friggin MYSTERY to me, but at least I FIXED IT! (Xstore Pro works best with Win98 native drivers.)

Hardware:
Epox EP58-MVP3C-M Motherboard
AMD K6-2 500
384 MB Micron PC-100 SDRAM
IBM DeskStar 8.4MB
Maxtrox Millenium G-200 AGP (16MB)
