For the second... i would not step away from using the DMATOOL.EXE and checking the boxes inside windows device manager...

Try installing the VIA Drivers Manually: go into the device manager, then select the Via Busmaster IDE Controller, go to change driver and select it manually from the directory with the 4in1 pack, an so for the Primary IDE controller and same for the Secondary...

NOTE: DON'T reboot before having re-installed ALL of those three drivers, even if windows should suggest this (and it will...).

This should make DMATOOL work...

btw: i have the same problem after upgrading to WinME (lousy performance...), and either using Windows' DMA check box or the DMATOOL didn't do very much about that...
