: XP detects high end drives as a scsi device in order to assign it the id 0 which it must have to be bootable, either scsi or IDE, rest assured that XP is using your device as an IDE controlled one and if you have installed the latest VIA 4 in 1 driver kit(version 3.82)then ATA 5 will be enabled. If you look in the drives advanced properties in XP you cant actually 'enable' a transfer mode by forcing, you can choose to 'use DMA if available' and the panel below that option will show you the current ATA status. If this is not ATA 5 download IBM disk manager and run the util from a floppy on start up, from the menu you will see one of the options is util that changes the mode of the drive at its lowest level, which may have been incorrectly set, choose the mode you want and quit the floppy and reboot.
