If the light is on the floppy drive all the time, the cable is either back to front or you need a new drive(about £8) or the FDC (controller on motherboard) is U/S, in which case you would need a new board if you really insist on a having a floppy.
How exactly this lead you to replace you hard drive is not understood.
Are you sure of which drive you mean?
