There are a few things you need to check, first does the board have an ATA 5 (Udma 100) header and if so have you used 80 core data ribbon on it. Do you have a CD or older HDD on the same controller? if you do it will default to the slowest supported mode for all devices(CD's run at MW 2 for DMA). If all of these are OK have a look at Gigabyte's site for any BIOS update, I have found theirs to be fairly unreliable, for instance often not enabling L2 cache on Duron\Athlon chips which leads to all manor of problems to DMA and AGP buses, out of the last six of their boards I have used, all needed a BIOS update to work correctly.!
