With XP you can go to drive manager and use advanced options to change the access mode of your drive, it will tell you the current ATA mode or PIO and allow you to select say ATA 5(which is what you want), XP should have picked this up though so I think you need to check your BIOS settings, make sure there are no settings disabled in here that would prevent better access,
BTW you dont have another drive on the same ribbon? if you do and unless its rated the same, the IDE chip will default to ATA 2 (UDMA33).
