I had the same problem with a scanjet 3200 but i discovered a way to clear the error.

Go into Control Panel, system, hardware, device manager. Select the vid_04e6 device, select update driver, specify a location and point it to the folder you unloaded the 3200 drivers to (in my case c:\sj648) and select hp3200c.inf. Windows will properly then properly install the scanner and the vid_04e6 device will dissappear
