I had the same problem with the same drive in my Toshiba P15 laptop. I found that if I physically pushed the drive door in and held it it would read no problem. (not very practical however).

Mine was passed the warranty so I decided to go inside and look at a few things. Drive unit is easily removed by one screw on the base at the back of the cd unit. I looked at the connections for any corrosion, but found none. Since I found that if the drive was held in against the tension of the eject spring it would work fine, I removed the spring. You have to go a bit deeper by removing black plastic plate(4 screws), copper tape, and 3 screws to get right inside. (not difficult) From there you will be able to locate the spring and remove it. I'm still not exactly sure what the bad design flaw is, but this worked for me.

Since the eject spring is gone now. I used a piece of packing tape attached to the bottom of the door to pull it open after hitting the eject button. Hope this helps.

Marty
