Having a Tecra, I encountered this problem as well and use the disable/reenable temporary fix as suggested above. I just stopped turning my laptop off so I didn't have the bother of playing with the sound drivers again.

Then my battery pack failed and since I hadn't reformatted for awhile (18mnths) I wiped everything and started over. (Currently using mains power without a battery pack)

Without even updating windows or anything, the sound problem was back, and this time disable/enable was not working.

So I went to the toshiba website, pulled the sound drivers from there and installed it again, even though I think it was the same version I downloaded anyway >.>

So I installed that, first reboot it didnt work so I tried disable/enable and that worked again.

Second reboot the sound stayed normal and has ever since. Though one catch. Windows Media Player refuses to open. Even if I reboot it wont open, though my sound plays fine when I play online games and such. So, maybe it was a media player problem or something, but if my sound works fine when media player doesn't, hey, I can live with that.

Unsure if that helps anyone or not, I haven't tried winamp yet to see if that will work or not, but someone might find the information useful.
