I doubt this is a BIOS problem. (The BIOS doesn't not usually corrupt itself... the OS on the other hand DOES....LOL) I would not try to update the BIOS on a unstable may make matters worse! The problem might be a CMOS memory/battery problem.

Try to enter the BIOS (usually hit delete during boot) and load "setup defaults". Make sure you save on BIOS exit. If that allows you to boot.. i would consider checking/changing the battery on the mb.

Or maybe the problem is a corrupt OS/disk.
Are you sure you Harddrive didn't die? What exactly is the error you see on attempted boot?
Can you boot from a bootable floppy?
