Have you tried 'detecting' via BIOS if no good enter 'user' and put the CHS values in yourself(actually put them in the BIOS not yourself, but you know what I mean)and enable LBA before you finish. If this fails use the disk manager from the drive makers site to perform partitioning\formatting, and no it wont use drive overlay so no worries there.
The version of DOS is irrelivant, unless you've downgraded your OS at the same time you upped the BIOS, it saw the drive before!!! all remains constant apart from the BIOS change, now there's a clue somewhere!
