It is not the bios, the hp pavilion has a max limit of ram avalible.

The maximum size of a DIMM module (for one socket) is 128 MB.

Motherboards with two DIMM sockets accept up to 256 MB of memory (2 x 128).

Motherboards with three DIMM sockets accept up to 384 MB of memory (3 x 128).
