I forgot to mention that some early mainboards with "USB support" had the misfortune of being designed to the very earliest USB spec - and it did not work. A new spec was on the street about the time the chips made it to mainboards. Most mainboard makers disabled the USB function in BIOS (I think VPX was one of them), but they didn't re-write the manuals.

When you find your mainboard maker and the maker's web site, look for BIOS release notes - they may indicate that USB support was disabled. You may need to ask the mainboard maker about this - otherwise, a 2-USB port expansion card is $10 to $20.
