: i have a Magitronic laptop with the system soft BIOS. It is looking for a partition on the HDD. Help.

Sounds like something may have damaged your Master Boot Record. You may have been hit by a virus, maybe had a software accident or - maybe a head crash (BAD). WARNING: If you CHANGE anything with fdisk, format or the like you MAY LOSE ALL OF YOUR DATA.

If you are familiar with DOS, boot to a floppy with fdisk on it (if NOT, get help from someone who IS familiar with DOS). First, see if you can see any directories, files, partitions, etc. If yes, then data recovery will be "easy", if you can't see anything, see if fdisk can see any partitions. If fdisk cannot see all/any of your partitions then mbr and partition record may be damaged or worse.

If you have really valuable data - consider a data recovery service, otherwise, when willing to risk losing your data try:
>fdisk /mbr

This is supposed to rebuild the mbr and if the damage is limited it might fix your problem and make your data accessible (probably won't help if there is physical damage). If not, you need to either recover the data and rebuild the HD from the beginning or just give up and rebuild. If you rebuild from the beginning, run scandisk, THOROUGH SURFACE SCAN, after format to make sure the surface is OK. If the boot block is physically damaged you will be unable to boot directly to that HDD.

If you have a desktop you may find all of this easier if you get a 2.5" to 3.5" HDD adapter and install your laptop drive on the desktop.

If you are uncomfortable with any of this GET HELP from someone who knows what they are doing.

Good Luck,
Henry
